Run with Music – Safety Speakers

by Daniel on June 20, 2008

If you’re on my mailling list then you already heard the story about how I got a prototype pair of speakers for running with my MP3 player.  They let me run with music by reducing the risk of getting hit by a car or surprised by someone or something.  Well, I said that I would try to put up a video showing the speakers, so I asked my buddy Jeremy to be the videographer and help me out.

I did a quick couple mile run in Boise and had him meet me on my usual route, which happens to be a pretty busy street during the morning commute with no sidewalks.  The music I chose for my run was Simple Minds (yeah, I love 80′s music).

Each time I run with music I understand a little better what others say about the motivation and increased energy that seems to be part of the run.  For example, when I started my run I felt physically crappy, but the music kept me going until I got into a groove.  When I had to stop for the camera I was a bit disappointed:(  I really got into  the run and the music gave me a good pace

OK, stop talking already and show me the video!  I know.

Enjoy! And after you watch it, post a comment telling what you think about the video (and the speakers)…

I think its a great idea, My wife would like them because she is pretty conscientious about what is going on around her. Not only for Cars, but predators. Earphones can make you oblivious to surroundings.

I think these are a great idea. I have run with music for the last few years and I got so paranoid with my earphones in/on that I finally just hung them around my neck and cranked up the volume so I could still hear the music. This seems like a much better approach.

My only question is whether or not the shoulder straps bugged you while you ran? I tried to run with a Camelbak on for water once, and the shoulder straps and having something on my back was driving me nuts. I always run with an Ipod strapped around my arm, so maybe I’d get used to it, but I wanted your feeling about the shoulder straps?

Meredith, I thought it would bother me, like a camelbak, but it didn’t. I was a bit surprised. All I can think is that it is light enough that I just don’t notice them. It might also have something to do with the music distracting me. Not really sure.

So this seems to be the only product like this that people aren’t panning. Are they available yet? Where can I get them?
